A few years ago, we sadly said goodbye to the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution, often called just Evo. It was a high-performance version of the standard Lancer sedan and was a popular choice for performance enthusiasts for decades. Now, we hear there are rumors that there could be a return of the Lancer Evolution.
According to Autocar, Mitsubishi has plans to return to its performance roots with an 11th-generation model of the Evo. They spoke with a Japanese source who said the new model would be available as either a four-door sedan or a five-door hatchback.
The details they found suggest the new model would share components with the Renault Megane RS. This could include a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine paired with a dual-clutch transmission and Mitsubishi Super All-Wheel Control.
One thing that would have to happen before the Evo could make a comeback is Mitsubishi introducing a new generation for the Lancer sedan as well. A return to its racing heritage is something Mitsubishi CEO, Osamu Masuko, wants to see, so this could work out nicely for Evo fans.
The Lancer Evolution Final Edition was an impressive vehicle with an output of 303 horsepower. If Mitsubishi brings back the Evo, we expect it would even more powerful.
