Because safe driving means protecting everyone on the road, not just everyone in the vehicle, Mitsubishi has announced a new Safe and Secure Lighting system that aims to keep pedestrians safe along with those riding in the vehicle.
This innovative new Mitsubishi safety system uses a combination of road-surface projections and car-body displays to inform pedestrians and other drivers about the car’s movements so they can better anticipate what the car plans to do next.
With this new technology, the driver’s actions automatically trigger a bright projection that lets pedestrians know when they intend to reverse or open a door, giving those around the vehicle plenty of time to respond in a safe way.
Research indicates that about 60% of pedestrian road fatalities happen at night, so Mitsubishi hopes that using bright, easy-to-read projections to signal a vehicle’s next move will help to reduce this number.
Additionally, there is a concern that it could be difficult to interpret the movements of future self-driving cars. So, Mitsubishi is also looking at ways to make this new technology useful in a future market where autonomous cars are more common.
